Giffgaff, the UK-based mobile virtual network operator using O2’s network and owned by Telefónica UK, is offering customers a new incentive to trade-in their old smartphones. For a limited period, the provider is giving a €47 (£40) trade-in bonus to customers who trade-in an old device when purchasing a used or refurbished phone from its website.
Only selected models are eligible
The trade-in bonus is not universal across all refurbished phones sold by Giffgaff. It applies to all refurbished Apple iPhone models except the less popular Apple iPhone 13 mini. Most refurbished Samsung phones also qualify, with the exception of the Galaxy X Fold 4 and the Galaxy A13. All refurbished Google Pixel models currently benefit from the offer.

Encouraging reuse over e-waste
The initiative is designed to promote the circular economy and reduce the volume of electronic waste. Giffgaff CEO Ash Schofield underlined that the enhanced offer supports both sustainability and value, giving consumers more reason to recycle dormant handsets. According to UK estimates, over 108 million unused phones worth over €11.8 billion are sitting in homes.
Simplicity is key to consumer choice
While specialised platforms can sometimes deliver higher returns, many users prefer a simple and secure trade-in process. Giffgaff’s offer aims to address this by combining ease of use with an attractive bonus. Smart move from giffgaff. The trade-in scheme is managed by Likewize, a well-known device lifecycle specialist.
