Finnish refurbisher Swappie advances automation in processing

Swappie, the Finnish Apple iPhone refurbisher, has taken a major step in professionalizing its refurbishment operations. The company is increasingly applying proprietary automation at its factories in Tallinn, Estonia, and Leipzig, Germany. Using advanced robotics, Swappie refines the refurbishment process to ensure Apple iPhones and iPads meet the highest quality standards before reaching customers. According to the company, nn a busy week, the Swappie processes between 10,000 and 20,000 devices. Serving over 2 million customers.

Precision, scalability, and diagnostics drive quality

Swappie’s automation extends beyond standard production lines. Its custom-developed system is designed for maximum precision, scalability, and thorough diagnostics, accelerating the refurbishment process. The automated line features five specialized modules that each perform separate quality checks. This enables more extensive testing and achieves a quality level exceeding typical industry standard. The new automation has doubled production capacity and significantly improved operational efficiency. Preventive maintenance prevents downtime, while fault detection automatically directs defective devices to the correct repair station without interrupting workflow.

Automation supports human expertise

Employees also benefit from automation. Staff can focus on higher-value tasks such as complex repairs, detailed quality control, and final inspections. Swappie successfully combines technological efficiency with the expertise and precision of its specialists. Martine Hardeveld Kleuver, Country Lead for the Netherlands and Belgium, states, “Automation allows robotic systems to test with greater precision, producing more reliable Apple iPhones. Efficient diagnosis and repair maximize each device’s lifespan, reducing electronic waste. Optimizing parts reuse ensures functional components are repurposed wherever possible, supporting a stronger circular economy.”

Smart modules accelerate refurbishment

Swappie’s automated production line consists of several modules that together ensure a complete, accurate, and fast refurbishment process. From activation to final diagnostics, the process takes under one hour. The modules include: activation module charges batteries, prepares devices for diagnostics, and wipes residual data. The cleaning module thoroughly cleans exteriors to reduce false diagnoses. Functional modules test buttons, multitouch responsiveness, battery performance, charging, Wi-Fi, audio, NFC, wireless charging, gyroscope, and camera functions. Vision modules use high-resolution cameras and dynamic lighting to detect cracks, scratches, dead pixels, and other defects. A spectrometer distinguishes OLED, LED, and counterfeit screens while evaluating glass and frame integrity.

Artificial intelligence is the next step

Swappie is preparing the next phase of automation: artificial intelligence. The current line captures ultra-high-resolution images of all device surfaces, laying the groundwork for AI-powered evaluation. Future AI systems will analyse these images to detect defects with greater accuracy than humans. Combining AI defect detection with ultra-high-resolution imaging ensures precise, standardized, and unbiased assessments, giving every Apple iPhone and iPad a fair and transparent evaluation.
