Dutch sustainable smartphone maker Fairphone claims that using their modular devices can help users cut costs over time. The company argues that its phones are built to last far longer than typical smartphones, largely due to their repairable, modular design and extended software support. Fairphone says its users keep their phones for an average of 5.5 years.
Industry average is slightly higher than expected
Fairphone promotes the idea that their device lifespan is more than double the industry average. However, new data from Assurant, one of the largest resellers of used smartphones, suggests otherwise. According to Assurant’s Q1 2025 figures, the average first-use lifespan of an Android device is now 3.93 years, which is higher than previously thought and closer to Fairphone’s 5.5-year claim. Still, Fairphone maintains a clear lead in terms of longevity.

Environmental impact remains a strong argument
Even if the numbers are not double, the longer lifespan of Fairphone still has clear environmental benefits. Extending the lifecycle of any device significantly reduces e-waste and lowers emissions from manufacturing. On that front, Fairphone continues to deliver on its mission.
Fairphone support and parts reduce expenses
Fairphone’s affordability goes beyond just lifespan. Spare parts are available at lower prices than most competitors, and the brand offers longer-than-average warranties and ongoing support. These factors contribute to a lower total cost of ownership over time. However one must note, that Fairphone 4 will skip long overdue Android 14 support and will receive Android 15 instead. When? That remains a big questionmark.
Enterprise-ready with Android certification
Fairphone devices are Android Enterprise Recommended, offering IT administrators advanced device security and remote management options. That makes the phones attractive not only for ethical consumers but also for companies aiming to reduce both their environmental footprint and IT overhead.
