Fairphone, the Dutch sustainable smartphone manufacturer, has announced a significant new partnership with the City of Amsterdam. As part of the agreement, Fairphone will supply a portion of the city’s official smartphone requirements, aligning with Amsterdam’s vision for a greener, more sustainable future. This partnership marks a milestone for Fairphone, whose headquarters have been based in Amsterdam since its founding, highlighting the company’s deep-rooted connection with the city.
A collaboration built on shared sustainability goals
Amsterdam’s Chief Technology Officer, Ger Baron, emphasized the importance of the partnership for the city’s sustainability goals. “The collaboration with Fairphone is long-cherished because, with this, we show that we can also contribute to a more sustainable organization in the area of hardware,” he noted. Baron also pointed out that the partnership supports Fairphone’s mission of promoting sustainable electronics by gradually moving toward a fully circular smartphone.
A proud moment for Fairphone’s Dutch roots
Fairphone’s Business Development Manager, John van der Ree, expressed pride in the collaboration with Amsterdam. “This is a proud moment for Fairphone, especially as a home-grown Dutch company. We couldn't be more thrilled to be Amsterdam's official smartphone of choice,” said van der Ree. He added that the timing feels “serendipitous” with Amsterdam’s 750th anniversary approaching in 2025, as both Fairphone and the city share a commitment to longevity and sustainability.
Looking ahead: expanding sustainable partnerships
This partnership with Amsterdam is just the beginning, as Fairphone aims to collaborate with more organizations that prioritize sustainability across the Netherlands and beyond. By working together with like-minded partners, Fairphone continues its mission to build a fair and sustainable future in the electronics industry, “one phone at a time.”
