The newly released Fairphone 6 is setting a new standard in smartphone design by making repairs accessible to everyone. With features like video repair guides, modular parts and a no-glue approach, Fairphone is proving that smartphones don’t have to be disposable. Fairphone provides step-by-step video instructions for replacing common components like the display, USB-C port and cameras. The battery, now secured with four screws instead of being tool-free, can still be replaced in under five minutes. These instructions offer a much-needed contrast to the complex repair processes seen in many modern smartphones.
Display replacement made easy
The 6.31-inch LTPO OLED screen is removable without glue, simplifying the repair process and reducing waste. It’s slightly smaller than its predecessor but much brighter, with an adaptive refresh rate from 10 to 120 Hz.
Ports and cameras are modular
The USB-C port and cameras are easy to access and replace individually. Fairphone’s approach ensures users don’t need to replace full modules unnecessarily. The phone includes a time of flight sensor in addition to its cameras, and thoughtful internal design decisions, such as pogo pins, reduce failure points.
Environmental gains from long use
A study by the Fraunhofer Institute confirms the environmental benefits: keeping a Fairphone for five years instead of three cuts annual emissions by around 33%. Fairphone supports that goal with spare parts and software updates until 2033 and a five-year warranty and scoring a 10 out of 10 when it comes to repairability.
