Fairbuds XL Gen 2 boosts modular audio and repairability leadership, iFixit reports

Fairphone has introduced the Fairbuds XL Gen 2, a fully modular over-ear headphone that builds on the success of its earlier model. The Dutch company, long recognised for its approach to ethical and repairable electronics, positions the updated headphones as a more durable, comfortable and sustainable alternative within the global audio market. The new iteration focuses on richer sound, improved comfort and simplified self repair, reinforcing Fairphone’s strategy of long-lasting consumer technology and reduced e-waste.

A focus on longevity and responsibility

Fairphone’s Chief Technology Officer Chandler Hatton emphasised that each design improvement had to contribute to both performance and responsibility. The company aimed to deliver a product that could be repaired and upgraded rather than replaced. This approach aligns with Fairphone’s philosophy that longevity must be built into the technology from the beginning, not added as an afterthought.

Teardown highlights simple repairs

iFixit has released a teardown video underscoring how easily the Fairbuds XL Gen 2 can be maintained. The battery and ear cushions can be replaced in only a few steps without any tools. Users removing the earcups from the headband only need to undo two screws and disconnect a cable. According to the teardown, the headphones remain far more repairable than most competing models.

Parts pricing and availability

Fairphone has listed a wide selection of replacement parts in its online shop. A pair of new drivers for both Fairbuds XL models costs €101.90, with the right driver priced slightly higher because it contains some electronics. Individual components such as the replacement battery (€ 19.95), ear cushions (€ 14.95), and the new headband, cable and fabric headband cover are also available, generally priced between € 15 and € 20. The company has also designed the new headband with screws and clips instead of magnets, offering a more secure fit at the expense of slightly longer replacement time.

Upgrading original Fairbuds XL models

Owners of the first generation Fairbuds XL are not left behind. The new drivers can be installed in the earlier model, giving users access to improved audio performance at a lower cost. This upgrade path further supports Fairphone’s philosophy of modularity and circularity, which aims to keep devices in use longer and limit the creation of unnecessary electronic waste.

Engineering choices favour modules over micro repairs

Although Fairphone has ensured easy access to high wear parts, the company acknowledges that some components, such as the USB-C port on the motherboard, remain too small for most consumers to repair. Rather than expecting complex micro soldering, Fairphone continues to design modules that can be swapped entirely, preserving accessibility without compromising quality.
