The European trade-in market for consumer electronics continues to grow, according to the 2025 Trade-in Index by Recommerce. This second edition highlights a strong increase in average resale values and the sustained demand for refurbished devices. In 2025, consumers receive an average of € 170 when reselling an old smartphone, a 10% rise compared to last year.
High resale value for Apple iPhones
Older Apple iPhones, particularly models 11 and 12, remain the most frequently traded-in and resold refurbished smartphones across Europe. Their long-lasting consumer appeal and durability help maintain strong residual value, while Samsung models lose ground in the Top 10, showing room for growth.
Beyond smartphones: game consoles and laptop
Trade-in is no longer limited to smartphones. Used game consoles now earn an average of € 188: a 25% increase since 2023. Tablets and laptops also offer high resale value, with average returns of € 180 and € 350 respectively. These figures highlight a shift in consumer behaviour: reselling used tech has become a smart and common practice.
Purchasing power and environmental impact
Recommerce points out that this market evolution not only supports consumers' purchasing power but also strengthens local refurbishment industries. A robust EU trade-in system contributes to supply chain resilience, reduces dependency on external markets, and supports the circular economy.
New platforms and future-forward solutions
Innovations like Recommerce's CircularX platform and ‘Forward Trade-In’ tool are enabling partners such as Boulanger, Ebay and ShowroomPrivé to create second life offers across more product categories. These services help scale the trade-in economy across Europe.
A circular model creating local value
By fuelling refurbishment through local trade-ins, the sector creates jobs and retains value within Europe. According to Recommerce CEO Augustin Becquet, “Our mission is to democratize trade-in in every category. Innovation is key to building a strong, multi-product and European market.”
