The European Commission has launched the Ecodesign Forum, an expert group set to ensure sustainable products become the standard within a competitive EU Single Market. This move aligns with the implementation of the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR), designed to strengthen product sustainability and foster a greener European economy.
The Ecodesign Forum will play a key role in implementing ESPR
The Ecodesign Forum is integral to the ESPR’s success. It provides a robust framework for setting mandatory performance and information requirements for products. These ecodesign requirements aim to reduce environmental impacts, improve reusability and reparability, and strengthen the EU Single Market.
A wide range of stakeholders will participate in this forum, including experts appointed by Member States, industry representatives, civil society organizations, and academics. Their collective input will help shape the development of ecodesign requirements and the preparation of ESPR working plans, which define the products and measures to be prioritized over specific periods.
Eurefas’ role in the Ecodesign Forum
Eurefas, the European Refurbishment Association, has proudly announced its appointment to the Ecodesign Forum. As a representative of the refurbishment sector, Eurefas is committed to ensuring that the interests of refurbishers are fully addressed during the implementation of the ESPR. The association’s involvement underscores the importance of promoting reusability, reparability, and refurbishment. Key objectives include improving product repairability by addressing design challenges related to spare parts and repair blockers. It also aims to ensure fairness for second-hand professionals by advocating for balanced regulations that support refurbishment activities. Additionally, Eurefas is focused on promoting transparency across the value chain by leveraging the Digital Product Passport to ensure refurbishers receive complete and accurate information.
Driving innovation and sustainability
The Ecodesign Forum and ESPR collectively represent a significant step toward achieving a circular economy in Europe. By fostering collaboration among key stakeholders, the initiative is poised to make sustainable products the norm, driving environmental benefits and economic growth across the Single Market.
