American company ecoATM has released its 2024 Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) report, underlining its ongoing leadership in recommerce and electronic waste reduction. For more than 15 years, ecoATM has helped millions of consumers trade in used smartphones, tablets, and other devices through a vast network of automated kiosks. This model supports both affordability and sustainability by extending the life of electronics and preventing e-waste. While ecoATM previously operated kiosks in Europe, the company has since withdrawn from that market and now focuses exclusively on the United States, where it continues to scale its efforts and environmental impact.
Company model supports circular economy
ecoATM operates 6,500 kiosks across the U.S., allowing people to exchange old phones, smarptphones, tablets, and MP3 players for money. Devices are either refurbished for resale or responsibly recycled. In 2024, the company collected 6.7 million devices and paid out € 288 million to customers. In doing so, it diverted 1.5 million kg of e-waste from landfills and eliminated 278,000 tonnes of CO2.
Recycling precious metals at scale
The 2024 report highlights the recovery of valuable materials: 104,000 kg of copper, 2,268 kg of silver, 231 kg of gold, and 157 kg of palladium. Devices worth € 3 or more are prioritized for reuse, reducing emissions by avoiding new production. Even phones below that threshold are accepted, with a minimum payout of € 0.93 to promote recycling behavior.
Sustainability, compliance, and ethics
ecoATM complies with a broad range of environmental and data protection regulations. The company is ISO certified in environmental management (14001), health and safety (45001), and information security (27001). Its supply chain is governed by a Supplier Code of Conduct, and all recyclers are vetted for compliance and best practices.
A people-first company culture
With 415 employees—of which 376 are full-time—ecoATM emphasizes safety, equity, and civic engagement. The firm offers paid leave for voting and volunteering, and supports local clean-up events. Core values such as authenticity and innovation remain central to its approach, both internally and externally.
ecoATM plans future growth
With e-waste volumes nearly doubling globally in the past decade and fewer than 25% of devices properly recycled, ecoATM’s mission is more relevant than ever. The company aims to expand its impact by increasing access to affordable devices while further reducing environmental harm through reuse.
