ecoATM Gazelle expands reach trade-in kiosks with new retail partnerships across the United States

ecoATM Gazelle, an American trade-in enabler in mobile device re-commerce, is expanding its footprint by introducing trade-in kiosks in three major retail chains in the USA: Aaron’s, Price Rite Marketplace, and Northeast Grocery Inc. (NGI). This expansion aims to provide more shoppers with the convenience of recycling and earning cash for their old mobile devices, enhancing the customer experience while also attracting new clientele to these stores.

A focus on untapped potential

According to ecoATM Gazelle’s research, the average American adult has approximately 2.4 unused phones at home, contributing to an estimated 150 million high-value smartphones sitting idle nationwide. ecoATM’s kiosks offer a practical solution, allowing individuals to exchange these unused devices for cash. Unlike mainland Europe, where kiosks are mainly found in electronics and telecom stores (if at all), ecoATM strategically places its kiosks in high-traffic locations not necessarily related to telecom or consumer electronics, maximizing accessibility for diverse consumer groups.

Expanding partnerships for greater impact

The partnership with Aaron's, a lease-to-own company specializing in furniture, appliances, and electronics, will initially see kiosks piloted in 25 stores, with a broader rollout planned for next year. By introducing kiosks in Aaron's locations, ecoATM offers customers a seamless way to turn unused phones into cash that can be immediately spent on other store products.

With Price Rite Marketplace and NGI stores, including Tops Friendly Market and Price Chopper/Market 32, ecoATM will expand to up to 150 locations across the Northeast. This rollout, scheduled for late 2024 and into 2025, will provide an easy recycling option for consumers during routine shopping trips, meeting them where they are.

Neil Fried, Senior Vice President of Corporate Development at ecoATM Gazelle, stated, “We’re excited to expand our network and help our new retailers provide shoppers with a turnkey, value-add experience that allows them to convert old phones into dollars that can be spent at the store.” Fried highlighted that 70% of cash payouts from kiosks are typically reinvested in the store where they are located, underscoring the revenue opportunity for these retail partners.

Commitment to sustainability

The partnership aligns with the sustainability goals of ecoATM's retail partners. Bill Thomas, Sustainability Specialist at Tops, expressed that the initiative supports Tops' mission to reduce its carbon footprint. "Our ongoing commitment to sustainability is met with enthusiasm and resolve every day as we work to ensure that we leave our communities—and our planet—better for the next generation, all while enabling our customers to contribute to these efforts," Thomas stated.

Since its start in 2009, ecoATM has recycled 50 million devices, preventing 22 million pounds of e-waste from reaching landfills and reducing CO2 emissions by two million tons. With these new partnerships, ecoATM's retail network now spans 25 partners and over 70 mall groups, furthering its mission to offer consumers both environmental and financial benefits.
