As economic uncertainty and environmental concerns dominate global conversations, consumer behaviors are undergoing a significant transformation. Many are shifting their focus toward sustainability, affordability, and personal values, creating a surge in recommerce—the buying and selling of used or refurbished goods. This trend is reshaping traditional retail, offering a more sustainable and cost-effective shopping alternative. eBay is at the forefront of this movement. The platform has seen a remarkable rise in activity, fueled by growing consumer interest in environmentally conscious shopping, value for money, and the joy of community-driven commerce.
Why recommerce is trending: value, sustainability, and connection
On Recommerce Day, eBay released its Recommerce Report 2024, providing insights into this rising phenomenon. According to the report, nearly two-thirds of consumers are rethinking their priorities, with hobbies, relationships, and sustainability emerging as top considerations. Additionally, 88% of respondents reported feeling optimistic about certain aspects of their lives, often crediting hobbies and community engagement for this positivity.
The findings also reveal that 86% of global consumers bought or sold used items in the past year, with Millennials and Gen Z leading the charge. Over 70% of these shoppers plan to continue prioritizing pre-owned products in 2024. “Recommerce aligns perfectly with evolving consumer values,” said Charis Marquez, Vice President of Fashion at eBay. “It combines sustainability, affordability, and the joy of discovering unique items.”
eBay in the circular economy
For years, eBay has been a champion for recommerce, actively driving the circular economy by facilitating the exchange of used goods. Pre-owned and refurbished items now account for 40% of eBay’s gross merchandise volume (GMV), highlighting the platform’s significant impact. Through initiatives like enhanced seller tools and partnerships with brands such as Logitech, eBay is making sustainable shopping more accessible. These efforts not only reduce waste but also offer consumers affordable alternatives to purchasing new products.
“We’re working to make sustainable shopping accessible to everyone,” explained Renée Morin, Chief Sustainability Officer at eBay. “By promoting used goods, we’re keeping items out of landfills and helping build a more sustainable future.”
Affordability and value
In a time of rising costs, many consumers are turning to used goods as a way to save money. Nearly 60% of eBay buyers said that secondhand shopping has become increasingly important in recent years, enabling them to stretch their budgets without compromising on quality or style.
Sustainability
Environmental consciousness is another driving force, with 68% of eBay users identifying sustainability as a key factor in their decision to buy used items. Gen Z and Millennials are especially committed to reducing waste, with over 70% stating that sustainability heavily influences their purchasing decisions.
The future of recommerce
eBay’s continued investments in technology, seller resources, and strategic partnerships highlight its leadership in the circular economy. “By making recommerce accessible, we empower consumers to make choices that benefit both their wallets and the planet,” said Jamie Iannone, President and CEO of eBay.
