Cyculus launches Europe’s first independent robotic device processing service, powered by Apkudo

Cyculus has officially launched as Europe’s first independent, fully automated provider of “Device Processing as a Service” (DPaaS) in Germany. This groundbreaking model is designed to transform how pre-owned mobile devices are processed, offering an unmatched combination of precision, consistency, and sustainability. In partnership with Apkudo, Cyculus leverages the Circular Industry Platform to meet the growing demand for high-quality secondary mobile phones.

What is Device Processing as a Service?

DPaaS is an innovative service model aimed at filling a critical gap in the technology market. It offers businesses and organizations access to advanced AI-powered, machine learning technology for processing mobile devices, from as few as 500 units per month to large-scale volumes. With the flexibility to define bespoke processing profiles, customers can tailor the service to meet their unique requirements, ensuring efficient and precise handling of devices. This model allows for fast turnaround times while maintaining the highest levels of consistency.

Leveraging AI, robotics, and machine learning

The company’s current automated systems can process up to 300 devices per hour, with operations running up to 23 hours a day. This setup results in an impressive capacity of 100,000 devices per month, demonstrating the potential scalability and efficiency of Cyculus’s DPaaS model.

A growing trend: automated processing in Europe

According to earlier research from CCS Insight, over 20% of used smartphones sold in Europe in 2024 are expected to be processed using robotic and automated systems—a trend that is set to grow further in the coming years. This highlights the increasing shift towards automation and the demand for consistent, high-quality processing solutions. Cyculus’s launch aligns perfectly with this trend, providing an independent and scalable solution that caters to Europe’s evolving secondary mobile device market.

Sustainability and scalability at its core

Cyculus is committed to promoting sustainability through advanced robotic processing. By efficiently processing used mobile phones, robotic automation not only extends the lifecycle of these devices but also reduces the need for new production, thereby minimizing the environmental footprint associated with manufacturing and disposal. By recirculating devices, Cyculus contributes to a more sustainable approach to technology consumption, ensuring that fewer resources are consumed and less waste is generated.

Fergal Donovan, Cyculus CEO and Co-Founder, highlighted the company’s mission: “Cyculus is committed to its core values of Innovate, Automate, and Recirculate. Apkudo is the right partner to power this promise to customers because they are defining and delivering a new standard to advance the industry.”

A European Centre of Excellence in Germany

As part of their strategic collaboration, Cyculus and Apkudo will establish a European Centre of Excellence in Germany. This hub will showcase the latest technologies in device processing and enhancement, setting a new benchmark in the industry. The centre will focus on leveraging AI, robotics, and Apkudo’s platform capabilities to provide Cyculus customers with the best tools for device management and decision-making.

Josh Matthews, Apkudo CEO and Co-Founder, expressed his excitement: “Apkudo’s combination of AI, robotics, and platform capabilities across business processes will help Cyculus and its network of customers use trusted data to inform all device decisions.”

Expanding beyond mobile devices

Initially focusing on mobile devices, Cyculus plans to extend its services to include tablets, wearables, IT equipment, and other electronic products. This expansion will allow a broader range of devices to benefit from the company’s advanced processing capabilities, ensuring that Cyculus and Apkudo’s technology continues to set industry standards.

Moving towards a sustainable future

Cyculus aims to go live with its first customers in Q4 2024. This milestone marks the beginning of a new era, according to the company, in device processing where innovation, efficiency, and sustainability come together to create value for businesses and the environment alike.
