German MVNO Congstar introduces smartphone return option

Congstar has launched a new trade-in proposition for customers signing up for a mobile contract. Those who choose an Allnet Flat plan in combination with a smartphone are offered the option to return the device at the end of the contract period. Customers who return their phones receive a so-called “return benefit” of around 20 % on average.

On Congstar

This German MVNO is fully owned by Deutsche Telekom, and offers flexible, affordable mobile plans using T-Mobile Germany’s network. Launched in 2007, it has grown to over 6 million customers by focusing on value, transparency, and strong branding. Congstar appeals to younger users with no-contract options, digital-first service, and frequent discounts. Despite being a low-cost provider, it positions itself as a quality brand. Its continued success is supported by customer satisfaction, network reliability, and innovative marketing strategies.

Return benefit lowers monthly cost

An example provided by Congstar shows that with the Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra on a 36-month Allnet Flat M plan, customers can lower their monthly instalments from € 48 to € 42. That adds up to a return benefit of over € 200. At the end of the 36-month period, the device is returned using a prepaid shipping label. Customers who prefer to keep their smartphone can do so by paying a final amount equal to the return benefit.

Promoting reuse through flexibility

Congstar says it wants to give customers maximum flexibility without financial risk and encourage the return of unused phones to the market. The company positions the return model as a sustainable option that supports the circular economy, especially in a market where many devices lie unused in drawers.

German customers hold onto devices

A survey conducted by Congstar and market research firm Cives reveals that 43.9 % of German respondents own one to two unused smartphones. Another 16.2 % store three to four, 4.8 % keep five to six, and 3.3 % even hold onto more than six old phones.

Discounts influence purchasing decisions

The same study found that 51 % of consumers consider discounts important when buying a new phone or signing a contract. For 32.2 %, these discounts are considered very important. One in three respondents said they would consider returning a phone after a set usage period if it resulted in cost savings. Smart move by Congstar by immediately discounting the monthly fee.
