Reports suggest that Xiaomi, Oppo, Vivo, and OnePlus are exploring Android versions without Google Mobile Services (GMS). Though still unconfirmed, this development follows growing geopolitical tensions and trade restrictions and could mark a strategic shift in the global smartphone landscape—particularly the secondary market. This isn’t the first time a major Chinese brand has been forced to go it alone. Huawei’s HarmonyOS emerged from the U.S. ban in 2019, which restricted access to Google’s software. With the potential for similar sanctions, other Chinese OEMs appear to be preparing contingency plans. Huawei’s involvement in this new push is rumored but remains unclear.
