The market for used smartphones in Brazil is no longer just a necessity but increasingly a conscious and strategic choice. According to research by Trocafone, a Brazilian company buying and selling refurbished smartphones, over 92,000 participants highlighted steady growth in Brazil’s used smartphone sector. Despite sustainability being often cited as a reason to buy used devices, only 29% of respondents mentioned environmental awareness as a key factor in their purchase decision. As everywhere, affordability is the main reason for consumers to buy an used or refurbished device.
Brazilians replace smartphones frequently
Trocafone’s study shows that replacement cycles are shortening. 60% of respondents replace their smartphones every two to three years, while 17% upgrade within 12 months. This highlights the speed and dynamism of the market. Consumers are also becoming more discerning, paying closer attention to price, security, and platform reliability. Flávio Peres, CEO of Trocafone, notes that this more critical consumer behaviour and growing trust in specialized platforms reflect a significant transformation in Brazil’s used smartphone market.
Market maturing with positive perception
“Previously stigmatized, the secondhand smartphone market in Brazil has matured and is now associated with convenience, savings, and security,” Peres explained. “Buying a used smartphone is no longer taboo but a smart choice that delivers cost-efficiency, safety, and positive impact.”
Profile of Brazil’s used smartphone buyer
The typical buyer is a man aged 30 to 44, earning up to € 760 per month. Most live in the Southeast region (64%) and use their smartphones for work, study, leisure, and content consumption. Consumers show careful buying behavior
According to the research, 88% use Google to research products or services before buying, more than half pay via credit card instalments, and 65% prefer prepaid or controlled plans, indicating more rational consumption choices.
