Apple has appointed Tata Group to manage after-sales repairs of Apple iPhones and MacBooks in India. The decision marks a shift in Apple’s strategy in one of its fastest-growing markets. According to Reuters, Tata will now handle complex repairs previously managed by ICT Service Management Solutions, an Indian unit of Taiwan’s Wistron.
A new role for Tata Group
Tata already assembles Apple iPhones at three facilities in South India. One of these plants also produces some iPhone components. With this new agreement, Tata’s Karnataka campus will now become responsible for repairs beyond the capability of local service centres.
Confidence in a long-term partner
This move signals growing trust in Tata as a strategic supplier. The transition of responsibilities from ICT to Tata is ongoing. Although Apple, Wistron and Tata did not respond to media requests, sources say the collaboration will strengthen Apple’s local ecosystem.
India’s growing Apple iPhone repair market
Apple’s market share in India rose to 7% in 2023, from just 1% in 2020. This growth is expected to increase demand for repairs. Counterpoint Research reports 11 million iPhones were sold in India last year, underlining the opportunity for a scaled repair operation.
Refurbished Apple devices in sight?
The deeper relationship between Apple and Tata may also lay the groundwork for future initiatives, including the direct sale of refurbished Apple devices in India, mirroring Apple’s current practice in the United States.
U.S. pressure remains a challenge
Despite Apple’s pivot to India, tensions in the U.S. linger. President Donald Trump recently criticised Apple for building in India and warned of 25% tariffs on Apple iPhones not made in the United States. Yet Apple CEO Tim Cook confirmed that most iPhones sold in the U.S. during the June quarter will be manufactured in India.
