Apple is set to introduce a new addition to its Apple iPhone lineup: the Apple iPhone 17 Air. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, this model will debut this fall with a design inspired by the MacBook Air. The key feature? A significantly thinner body while maintaining battery life. The Apple iPhone 17 Air will blend premium and budget-friendly components. While it will be thinner than other models, Apple has taken extensive measures to ensure that battery life remains uncompromised. Achieving this required an almost impossible effort from Apple engineers, particularly in refining the battery design.
Apple’s vision of a port-free future
Gurman reveals that Apple initially considered making the Apple iPhone 17 Air the first completely port-free model. Wireless charging and cloud-based data transfer were set to replace physical connections entirely. However, Apple had to reconsider due to regulatory constraints in the European Union.
EU regulations forced a design shift
New EU laws, effective since December 2024, mandate that all small chargeable electronics, including smartphones, feature a USB-C port. This regulation applies even to used models imported into the EU. As a result, Apple opted to include a USB-C port in its thinner Apple iPhone 17 Air, aligning with compliance requirements while continuing its design evolution.
