Apple’s upcoming operating system, iOS 26, was officially announced on 9 June 2025 during the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC). The update, set for general release in mid-September 2025, brings new features and improvements to a wide range of Apple iPhones. However, as with previous updates, some older models will no longer be supported. A warning to the global secondary iPhone market: consider offloading pre-iPhone 11 models now, as a major price drop is expected in August.
Three models lose compatibility this year
While iOS 18 retained compatibility with all models supported by iOS 17, iOS 26 marks a shift in Apple’s software support policy. The Apple iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max and iPhone XR will no longer receive the latest update. These models, which debuted in 2018, remain compatible with iOS 18 but will not be supported by iOS 26.
iOS 26 will support recent models
Apple has confirmed that iOS 26 will be available for the full iPhone 11, 12, 13, 14, 15 and 16 line-ups, including mini, Plus, Pro and Pro Max models. The iPhone SE (2nd generation and newer) is also included. However, compatibility does not guarantee access to all new features, as some functionalities may remain exclusive to newer hardware.

Apple continues to push software evolution
The iOS 26 rollout reflects Apple’s ongoing effort to optimise performance, security and user experience for newer hardware. As in previous years, the company balances innovation with device longevity, gradually phasing out support for models that are now seven years old or more.
