Apple CEO Tim Cook explains $ 2.5 billion investment in Corning’s glass factory

Apple has confirmed a € 2.13 billion investment in Corning’s Kentucky factory to produce advanced glass for Apple iPhones and Apple Watches. CEO Tim Cook highlighted innovation, quality and cost efficiency as the main reasons for choosing Corning. Corning has been a key supplier to Apple since 2007, when the first Apple iPhone was launched with its specialized glass. Over the years, the collaboration has evolved, particularly with the introduction of ceramic shield technology, which has made Apple devices more durable without sacrificing design.

Ceramic shield strength improvements

Tim Cook pointed to the durability of Corning’s ceramic shield, describing it as thin, light and resistant. Corning CEO Wendell Weeks explained that the latest generation of the shield is 50% stronger than the original. This advancement is expected to further enhance the resilience of future Apple iPhones and Apple Watches.

Expanding workforce and production

Weeks also noted that Apple’s € 2.13 billion investment would result in a 50% increase in the Kentucky factory’s workforce. In addition, production capacity is expected to triple, cementing the site’s role as a leading center for specialized glass manufacturing.

Local economic benefits

Cook emphasized the broader economic impact of domestic manufacturing. He said that factories not only create jobs but also stimulate local businesses, forming hubs of economic activity. Weeks reinforced this point, describing Corning’s operations as a “social contract” with the community. The Kentucky factory has been active since 1952 and employs several generations of workers, with today’s employees producing advanced glass far beyond the capabilities of their predecessors.

A future of innovation and resilience

Apple’s decision to centralize glass production at Corning reflects a broader strategy to strengthen its supply chain and maintain product quality. For Apple, innovation and long-term partnerships remain central to ensuring durability and customer trust in Apple iPhones and Apple Watches.
