Apple passes 60% emissions cut on road to 2030 carbon neutrality

Apple has announced a milestone in its journey to become carbon neutral across its full value chain by 2030, revealing that it has already achieved a 60% reduction in global greenhouse gas emissions since 2015. This progress is part of its broader Apple 2030 strategy and was detailed in the company’s newly released Environmental Progress Report.

Clean energy powers global supply chain

One of Apple’s most impactful initiatives is its ongoing transition to renewable electricity across its supply chain. In 2024 alone, Apple and its suppliers brought 17.8 gigawatts of clean energy online, helping to avoid 21.8 million metric tons of emissions. Suppliers also improved energy efficiency, cutting nearly 2 million metric tons more.

Semiconductor suppliers curb emissions

Apple is also addressing emissions from industrial processes. Twenty-six semiconductor suppliers and all display suppliers have committed to reducing 90 percent of fluorinated gas emissions by 2030. In 2024, these efforts helped cut 8.4 million metric tons of greenhouse gases.

Recycled materials drive sustainability

Apple continues increasing the use of recycled materials in its products. It now uses 99 percent recycled rare earth elements in all magnets and 99 percent recycled cobalt in all Apple-designed batteries. The new MacBook Air boasts over 55 percent recycled content, the highest ever for an Apple product.

Millions of tons of waste diverted

Apple’s Zero Waste program is paying off: 600,000 metric tons of waste were diverted from landfills in 2024, totalling 3.6 million since 2015. Innovations like recyclable manufacturing materials and liquid metal recovery contribute to these gains.

Water conservation hits new highs

Apple’s Supplier Clean Water Program has now saved over 90 billion gallons of water since 2013. In 2024 alone, 14 billion gallons were conserved, while Apple moves closer to its 2030 goal of replenishing all freshwater use in high-stress regions.

Apple encourages device recycling

Ahead of Earth Day, Apple is promoting its in-store recycling program, offering 10% off accessories when users trade in eligible products before 16 May. This initiative is part of Apple’s mission to engage customers in its environmental journey.
