Survey: Apple owners replace devices quickly, boosting secondary market and repair opportunities

A recent survey conducted by CIRP in the US highlights the importance of Apple devices to their users, particularly Apple iPhones. The data shows that over 80% of iPhone buyers would replace or repair a lost or broken device within just one or two days, with nearly half taking action the very same day. Apple iPhones, it seems, are indispensable to their owners.

Mac buyers show similar urgency

Mac computer buyers follow closely behind in their urgency to replace or repair devices. Approximately 70% of Mac users reported they would act within a day or two, though only one-third said they would do so immediately. This underscores the significant role Macs play in users' daily lives.

Apple iPads are less urgent but still important

While still valued, iPads are considered slightly less essential than iPhones or Macs. Only 58% of iPad buyers indicated they would replace or repair a lost or broken iPad immediately or within two days. This suggests that iPads, while important, are not as central to users' routines.

High commitment across all Apple devices

A remarkable 96% of iPhone buyers, 89% of Mac buyers, and 85% of iPad buyers would replace or repair their devices within a week. These figures demonstrate how integral Apple devices are to their owners’ personal and professional lives. At the other end of the spectrum, only 1% of Apple iPhone buyers and a similar percentage of iPad buyers would not replace their lost or broken devices. Even among Mac owners, only 3% would let a lost or broken Mac be their last.

Conclusion

The survey, while conducted in the United States, likely reflects similar trends in other regions worldwide. Apple’s devices have a global appeal, and the urgency exhibited by customers to replace or repair their lost or broken devices transcends geographical boundaries. This represents a significant opportunity for companies specializing in device repairs, as well as for businesses dealing in used and refurbished hardware.

Repair companies can position themselves as essential service providers, offering quick, reliable solutions to customers eager to regain access to their devices. Similarly, resellers of pre-owned and refurbished hardware can leverage this trend, showcasing their inventory as cost-effective alternatives for buyers looking to replace their devices swiftly.

However, effectively targeting this segment of customers presents unique challenges. Marketing strategies need to be tailored to reach this specific audience, particularly those in immediate need of repairs or replacements. Identifying touchpoints, such as social media platforms, search engine ads, or partnerships with tech-focused communities, can be instrumental. Additionally, messaging must emphasize speed, reliability, and cost-effectiveness to resonate with this audience.

Developing localized strategies, understanding cultural nuances, and addressing regional customer preferences will be critical for businesses aiming to expand globally in this sector. By addressing these challenges, repair and resale companies can unlock substantial growth opportunities while catering to the high demand for quick replacements or repairs among Apple device users worldwide.
