Apple continues to divide opinions with its ever-changing approach to chargers and accessories. What began with the removal of headphones from Apple iPhone boxes has now evolved into a complex policy that varies across product categories. While some devices, such as MacBooks and Vision Pro, still come with chargers, others like the Apple iPhone, Apple Watch, and AirPods no longer do. The rationale, according to Apple, is environmental sustainability. Critics, however, argue that it has as much to do with cost savings and accessory upselling as with the planet.
MacBook still includes a power adapter
MacBook buyers can rest easy knowing that a charger remains part of the deal. Every model, from the lightweight MacBook Air to the performance-heavy MacBook Pro, ships with a USB-C power adapter ranging from 30W to 140W, depending on configuration. Most modern MacBooks also include Apple’s braided USB-C to MagSafe 3 cable, ensuring fast and stable charging.
Experts point out that MacBooks’ large batteries make the inclusion of a charger essential. While technically possible to charge a MacBook with a smartphone adapter, the process is slow and impractical. Given the professional audience and power demands, Apple has wisely kept the charger in the box.
Apple iPad keeps its charger, for now
Most Apple iPads continue to include a 20W USB-C power adapter, a decision that appeals to families, students, and general consumers who may not own high-wattage chargers. However, this inclusion now varies by region. In the EU and U.K., Apple has started removing the charger to align with its environmental commitments. Analysts predict the rest of the world may soon follow suit, as Apple moves to standardize its packaging policy globally.
Apple iPhone users still need to buy a charger
Since 2020, the Apple iPhone has shipped without a power adapter. Buyers only receive a cable, now USB-C to USB-C, while the charger can be purchased separately for about € 25 from Apple. Apple maintains that this reduces e-waste, but critics see it as a way to increase margins. Many users also note that older 5W or 10W adapters are incompatible with newer fast-charging capabilities, forcing an additional expense.
Apple Watch includes the puck, not the plug
The Apple Watch now ships only with its magnetic charging puck, not the wall adapter. Apple argues that most Watch owners already have a compatible charger for their Apple iPhone. However, fast charging, introduced with Series 7, requires a higher-wattage adapter, meaning some users will still need to buy extra accessories to benefit from faster recharge times.
Apple AirPods rely on existing chargers
Apple’s AirPods, including the latest AirPods 4, do not come with a charger and never have. The earbuds ship with a charging case and cable, but the wall adapter is sold separately. Newer models now support USB-C and can even charge via MagSafe or an Apple Watch charger, improving flexibility for users deeply invested in Apple’s ecosystem. For first-time buyers, however, the absence of a wall plug remains a small but costly surprise.
