Apple and Corning expand U.S. glass production

Apple is investing € 2.29 billion (US$2.5 billion) in Corning’s Harrodsburg, Kentucky, facility to produce 100% of the cover glass for Apple iPhone and Apple Watch. For the first time, all units sold worldwide will feature cover glass manufactured in the U.S. Corning will establish the world’s largest smartphone glass production line at the site, dedicated solely to Apple. The expansion will boost manufacturing and engineering jobs in Kentucky by 50%. A new Apple-Corning Innovation Center will focus on advanced materials and next-generation manufacturing technologies.

Part of € 549 billion U.S. investment plan

The project is part of Apple’s broader plan to invest more than € 549 billion (US$ 600 billion) in the U.S. over four years through its American Manufacturing Program. The initiative aims to onshore production of key components and support American suppliers.

Longstanding partnership since 2007

Apple and Corning’s collaboration dates back to the first Apple iPhone in 2007. Corning’s Ceramic Shield glass, developed in Harrodsburg, remains the most durable in any smartphone. Since 2017, Apple has invested nearly € 457 million (US$ 500 million) in Corning’s Kentucky operations.

Supporting the wider U.S. supply chain

Corning also supplies materials to GlobalWafers, helping produce advanced silicon wafers in the U.S. Apple works with thousands of suppliers in all 50 states, supporting over 450,000 jobs, and plans to hire 20,000 more U.S. employees in the next four years.
