The Google Pixel 4a, released in 2020, is about to undergo a significant change with the rollout of Android 13 starting January 8, 2025. While the update is intended to introduce enhanced battery management features, reports suggest it might negatively impact the battery performance of certain Google Pixel 4a devices. These phones, referred to as “Impacted Devices,” could experience reduced battery capacity and slower charging.
Google responds with free battery replacement program
In response to potential battery issues, Google has launched a battery performance program for affected Pixel 4a users. Owners of eligible devices can receive free battery replacements. To determine eligibility, users can visit Google's support website and input their phone’s International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) number. If eligible, customers can opt for a walk-in repair or a mail-in service for the battery replacement.
Additional compensation for non-eligible devices
For Pixel 4a users whose devices are not eligible for a free battery replacement, Google is offering alternative compensation. This includes a $50 USD payment or a $100 USD discount code for Google hardware, which can be applied towards the purchase of a new Pixel device from the Google Store.
Beta testers report severe battery performance decline
Some Pixel 4a owners who beta-tested Android 13 have reported significant performance issues, claiming that the update has made their devices almost unusable. These early reports may have prompted Google to preemptively address the problem by introducing the battery replacement and compensation programs.
Not all pixel 4a variants affected
It is important to note that not all Pixel 4a devices are impacted by this update. For instance, the Pixel 4a 5G variant appears to be unaffected by the battery issues. Devices not identified as "Impacted Devices" will retain their existing battery performance and will not qualify for Google’s appeasement offers.
Google maintains confidence in Pixel brand
Despite the Pixel 4a being well beyond its typical support window, Google’s proactive approach to addressing potential issues reflects positively on its commitment to customer satisfaction. By offering solutions to affected users, Google reinforces confidence in its Pixel brand and demonstrates a willingness to support long-term users.
