Amazon Launches second chance deal days for sustainable shopping

Amazon is set to launch its inaugural Second Chance Deal Days, an event catering to consumers seeking sustainable shopping alternatives without sacrificing quality or value. This week-long event, running from 3 September  to 9 September, marks a significant step in Amazon’s commitment to extending product lifecycles and reducing waste by offering substantial discounts on high-quality returned and refurbished items.

A New Era of Sustainable Shopping

The introduction of Second Chance Deal Days highlights a growing trend among European consumers. Over two-thirds of Europeans are now actively purchasing second-hand goods, a shift primarily driven by cost of living concerns (34%), environmental considerations (30%), and the sheer convenience (29%) of such options. This indicates a strong market demand for initiatives like Amazon’s Second Chance Deal Days, which directly addresses these consumer priorities.

Unprecedented Savings on Quality Items

During the Second Chance Deal Days, customers can expect to find discounts of up to 50% off recommended retail prices on a vast array of quality used and refurbished products. Amazon’s extensive inventory includes over 60 million second-hand products available across Europe, spanning nearly all product categories. These categories encompass personal tech and computing, gaming, home and kitchen essentials, fitness equipment, and toys, ensuring a diverse selection for every shopper. Last year alone, Amazon customers in Europe collectively saved over €350 million by opting for second-hand purchases.

Building Trust in Pre-Owned Products

A key aspect of Amazon’s strategy is to foster trust in the second-hand market. Research commissioned by Amazon reveals that Europeans' primary concerns when considering pre-owned purchases revolve around product condition, warranties, and return guarantees. Amazon addresses these concerns head-on by implementing rigorous inspection processes for every returned product. Items meeting Amazon’s stringent quality standards are thoroughly tested, cleaned, and repaired as needed before being made available for resale at a discount.

Sam Littlejohn, Head of Returns and Repairs at Amazon Europe, emphasizes this commitment. "We've seen that once customers experience the value and quality of these products, they become confident second-chance shoppers, saving money along the way and helping to extend product lifecycles," Littlejohn stated. He further assured customers that "any used product they buy meets our quality standards and comes with Amazon's customer service and return policies."

From Reducing Returns to Resale

Amazon’s overarching goal is to minimize returns by helping customers make the right purchase the first time. This is achieved through comprehensive product information, high-quality photos and videos, and detailed customer reviews. For specific items in fashion and homeware, Amazon leverages AI-driven size charts and augmented reality features, allowing customers to visualize products in their own space. However, when a product is returned, the priority shifts to keeping it in use whenever possible, aligning with Amazon's sustainability objectives.

Sam Littlejohn summarized Amazon's philosophy, stating, "Our approach is simple. If a product can have a useful purpose, we want it to have a second chance. It’s great for our customers, Amazon and the planet."

Amazon’s Dedicated Resale Programs

To facilitate the resale of used, returned, and refurbished items, Amazon operates two primary programs, both fully supported by Amazon’s customer service and return policies:

Amazon Resale: This program offers used and open-box products at discounted prices. Each item undergoes a meticulous inspection before being offered for resale, with clear condition descriptions such as “Like New,” “Very Good,” “Good,” or “Acceptable.” This transparency empowers customers to make well-informed shopping decisions, with prices reflecting the item's condition.

Amazon Renewed: This program features refurbished products sold by Amazon’s qualified selling partners. Every product within the Amazon Renewed program is professionally inspected, cleaned, and tested to ensure functionality and quality, before being offered at competitive prices. Examples of products found under Amazon Renewed include professionally refurbished Apple iPhones, laptops, and other electronics, providing a trusted avenue for acquiring like-new devices.

This shopping event promotes sustainable choices without compromising quality or value, offering significant savings.
