Amazon India has dismissed reports suggesting that it plans to shut down its refurbished product platform, Amazon Renewed. The company has, however, confirmed that it will discontinue sales of externally refurbished products. According to Amazon, customers can continue purchasing refurbished products from top brands on Amazon Renewed, provided these items have been tested and certified by professionals authorised by Amazon India. The company aims to improve quality control and the overall shopping experience by limiting sales to in-house certified products. We have not heard that other Amazon countries are taking similar steps. It seems to be isolated to India only.
Renewed launched in 2017
Amazon introduced Renewed in 2017 as a platform for selling refurbished electronic products, including hard disks, laptops, PCs, smartphones, and gaming accessories. The program allowed both third-party suppliers and Amazon’s own network to sell certified pre-owned products.
Changes driven by customer experience
A spokesperson for Amazon India stated that the decision to stop selling externally refurbished products was made in response to quality concerns, high return rates, and customer complaints. The company is committed to enhancing customer satisfaction through better product testing and certification.
Competition in India’s ecommerce sector
Amazon’s decision comes as the Indian ecommerce market becomes increasingly competitive. Companies are focusing on faster delivery times, with quick commerce firms pushing for same-day or even two-hour deliveries. Additionally, Amazon has been expanding its ultra-fast delivery service, Amazon Now, in select areas of Bengaluru.
