Amazon announced it will add nearly 5,000 electric delivery vans to its European network, marking its largest single deployment on the continent. The vans will operate in Austria, France, Germany, Italy, and the UK, supporting Amazon’s broader Climate Pledge to achieve net-zero carbon across its operations by 2040.
Mercedes-Benz partnership enhances fleet
The new vans, including eSprinter and eVito models from Mercedes-Benz, are designed based on feedback from drivers and delivery partners. Custom shelving improves package organisation, while ergonomic and safety enhancements benefit drivers. Manufactured in Germany and Spain, these vehicles are expected to travel over 100 million kilometres annually and deliver more than 200 million packages.
Fleet electrification expands in Europe
Neil Emery, Amazon’s Director of Global Fleet & Product, said the deployment demonstrates Amazon’s commitment to reducing carbon emissions. “From electric bikes to vans to trucks, we are transforming our transportation network,” Emery stated, highlighting collaboration with manufacturers and policymakers to accelerate electrification.
Electric heavy trucks complement vans
Amazon recently ordered over 200 eActros600 electric heavy trucks from Mercedes-Benz Trucks. These trucks will serve middle-mile routes in the UK and Germany, transporting trailers between fulfilment centres, sort centres, and delivery stations. With 360kW charging stations at key sites, the trucks can charge from 20 to 80% in just over an hour. Once fully operational, these vehicles are expected to transport more than 350 million packages per year.
Micro-mobility supports sustainable delivery
Amazon has established more than 60 micro-mobility hubs in over 45 European cities, including London, Paris, Milan, Munich, Florence, Rome, and Vienna. These hubs enable zero-exhaust emission deliveries on foot or using e-cargo bikes, contributing to cleaner urban logistics and reduced environmental impact.
Scaling sustainability across operations
With over 30,000 electric delivery vehicles already deployed globally, Amazon continues to optimise route efficiency, expand charging infrastructure, and integrate zero-exhaust emission solutions across its network. The European van deployment represents another major step in achieving its long-term decarbonisation targets.
